October 15, (THEWILL) – South Africa’s Bafana Bafana drew 1-1 with Congo in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Tuesday evening. The match took place at the Alphonse Massemba-Debat Stadium in Brazzaville, Congo. Elias Mokwana scored for South Africa, while Mons Bassouamina equalised for the hosts.

The result positions South Africa favourably in Group K, where they currently hold second place behind Uganda. With a four-point advantage over third-placed Congo, Bafana Bafana are on the verge of qualifying for the continental finals scheduled in Morocco next year. A victory in either of their remaining two qualifiers in November would guarantee their participation in the tournament.

South Africa dominated the early stages of the match, creating several chances. Mokwana’s goal in the 33rd minute gave the visitors the lead, but Congo equalised through Bassouamina just before half-time. The second half saw both teams pushing for a winner, with Congo applying significant pressure and South Africa regaining control as the match progressed.

South Africa’s performance indicates their readiness for the upcoming AFCON tournament, should they qualify. However, the injury to key player Themba Zwane, who was substituted in the 40th minute, may present a concern for the team moving forward.

Looking ahead, both South Africa and Congo will return to Group K action for their final two fixtures in November 2024. These matches will be crucial in determining the final standings and which teams will represent the group in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
