Slovakia Stun Belgium In Massive Euro 2024 Upset

June 17, (THEWILL) – Ivan Schranz’s early goal proved the difference as Slovakia pulled off a massive 1-0 upset over Belgium in their Euro 2024 Group E opener in Frankfurt. The Slovaks took an early lead after pouncing on a defensive error, with Schranz tapping home the rebound after Juraj Kucka’s initial effort was saved.

Belgium dominated possession but found no way past the inspired Martin Dubravka in goal for Slovakia. The Red Devils had a host of chances to equalise, with Romelu Lukaku particularly wasteful in front of goal.

The striker had a goal ruled out for offside, volleyed into the side netting, and forced two good saves from Dubravka as Belgium laid siege to the Slovak goal in the second half. However, David Hancko produced a brilliant goal-line clearance to deny Johan Bakayoko an equaliser.

Lukaku thought he had finally levelled in the dying seconds when converting a cross from Lois Openda. But the goal was disallowed after a VAR review showed Openda had handled in the build-up. It meant Slovakia held on for a famous first-ever victory over Belgium to claim second place in Group E behind Romania.

For Belgium’s ‘Golden Generation’, it was a hugely disappointing start to what could be their final European Championship. Coach Domenico Tedesco will demand a response from his side in their next game against Romania on Saturday.
