May 17, (THEWILL)- Feyenoord coach, Arne Slot, has confirmed he will take over as Liverpool manager next season when Jurgen Klopp departs the English Premier League club. The 45-year-old Dutchman revealed the news at a press conference on Friday. According to reports from ESPN, “I can confirm that I will become the trainer there next year”, Slot stated.

Feyenoord have also announced Slot’s imminent departure, posting a video on X (formerly Twitter) saying “The Arne Slot era is coming to an end. Let’s enjoy the last moments.” Slot has been in charge of the Dutch side since 2021, winning the Eredivisie title in 2022/2023, as well as the KNVB Cup this term. He also led Feyenoord to the UEFA Europa Conference League final in his debut season.

Klopp had previously announced in January that he would be leaving Liverpool at the conclusion of the current 2023/2024 campaign after over seven years in charge at Anfield. The 56-year-old German’s final game will be against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday. Though Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso and Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim were linked to the Merseyside club earlier, Slot appears set for the role.

Liverpool have yet to officially confirm Klopp’s successor. However, Slot had signed a new Feyenoord contract until 2026 last year, meaning the Reds likely had to pay compensation to secure his services. The appointment continues the recent trend of EPL clubs hiring coaches from the Eredivisie.

Slot will have big shoes to fill after Klopp’s successful tenure which included an EPL title in 2019/2020 and an UEFA Champions League triumph in 2019. The new man will be tasked with reviving Liverpool’s fortunes after the results of this 2023/2024 season.
