September 08, (THEWILL) – Jannik Sinner claimed his second Grand Slam title of 2024 at the US Open on Sunday, defeating Taylor Fritz in straight sets. The Italian world number one beat Fritz 6-3 6-4 7-5 in the final at Arthur Ashe Stadium, becoming the first Italian man to win the tournament in New York.
The victory marks Sinner’s sixth title and 55th match win of the season. It follows his maiden Grand Slam triumph at the Australian Open in January, cementing his position alongside Carlos Alcaraz as a leader of tennis’s younger generation. Alcaraz won the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this year, bringing his major title count to four.
Fritz, ranked 12th in the world, was aiming to end a 21-year drought for American men in Grand Slam singles. The last US male champion at a major was Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open. Despite support from celebrities including Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce, and Matthew McConaughey, Fritz was unable to overcome Sinner’s consistent play.
Sinner’s performance was characterised by fewer unforced errors and strong serving. He saved three break points early in the third set before breaking Fritz’s serve as the American attempted to force a fourth set. The Italian sealed his victory when Fritz hit a forehand into the net on championship point.
Sinner’s win adds to the growing list of achievements for Italy in men’s tennis, following Adriano Panatta’s French Open victory in 1976 and Matteo Berrettini’s Wimbledon final appearance in 2021. The match drew a crowd of 23,000 to Arthur Ashe Stadium.
