Shettima Inaugurates 500 Housing Units In Sokoto

September 11, (THEWILL) – Vice President Kashim Shettima, on Sunday, launched a 500-Housing unit project in Sokoto state, to be constructed by Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto.

The project was laid in Kalambaina, Wamakko local government area of the state. The Vice President, while laying the foundation, said the country needs an estimated 28 million housing units to provide adequately for the population across the federation.

He also said that an estimated sum of N21 trillion is required to provide these housing units to fill the deficit.

Shettima, however, commended the effort of the state governor, Ahmed Aliyu, for embarking on the project within a short period of one hundred days in office, adding that “it is highly commendable and worthy of emulation.

“I sincerely appreciate what I am seeing in Sokoto today and the kind of achievements I saw in the state within a short period of 100 days will serve as a challenge and yardstick to measure the performance of other Progressives governors across the country and indeed the oppositions within the same period.”

Earlier, the State Governor said the housing estate was aimed at providing accommodations to state and federal Civil servants, as well as to bring down the cost of rented apartments in the state metropolis.

He said the state government will spend N7.3 billion for the construction of the new housing project.

“Housing challenges in the state have given birth to the high cost of rent and reduce the development of shanty settlements with its attendant consequence, as well as reduce environmental hazards”, the Governor said.

Earlier, the State Commissioner for Land and Housing, Barrister Nasir Aliyu Dantsoho, explained that the 500 housing units will include 300 three-bedroom apartments and 200 two-bedroom apartments, which will cost the government N7.3 billion.

“The government will provide all essential facilities in the estate including Water, schools, hospitals and markets, roads, recreation centres, etc.

“The project is expected to close the gap in the state housing deficit, especially for civil servants in the state capital”, the Commissioner added.
