Sheffield Soils Chelsea Clean-Sheet-Run But Lose 4-1

BEVERLY HILLS, November 07, (THEWILL) – London side Chelsea climbed towards the summit of the Premier League as they came from behind to beat Sheffield United 4-1 at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues came into this fixture having kept clean sheets in each of their last five matches with new Senegalese keeper Edouard Mendy winning plaudits for his performance between the sticks.

Chelsea intended to add to that run. They went close to breaking the deadlock in the fourth minute when left back Ben Chilwell was denied by Sheffield goalie Aaron Ramsdale at the far post following good work from striker Tammy Abraham.

But, the Blues were unexpectedly behind five minutes later. Right midfielder George Baldock and Norwegian midfielder for Sheffield Sander Berge combined excellently from a short corner to tee up Irish centre forward David McGoldrick, who converted with a stylish flick.

After going behind by conceding for the first time in 459 minutes, Lampard’s charges did not need too long to respond. Moroccan winger Hakim Ziyech released the Croatian Mateo Kovacic down the right and the latter pulled back for Abraham to level matters with a measured finish in the 23rd minute.

German Timo Werner rattled the underside of the crossbar just after the half-hour mark following a Kovacic free-kick. But, the comeback was completed when Chilwell converted at the far post after Ramsdale misjudged Ziyech’s excellent cross.

As the hosts went looking for a goal to completely kill off the game as a contest, Kovacic shot narrowly wide in the 48th minute. But, that aim was achieved when Chelsea centre back Thiago Silva was left unmarked to head home Ziyech’s right-wing free-kick.

Although Werner was just off target with a lofted finish moments later, he made no mistake after a loose ball squirmed into his path in the 80th minute. The German emphatically applied the final gloss to the scoreline with his goal.

While the victory takes Chelsea to third on the Premiership table behind Southampton and Liverpool, the situation looks actually dire for Sheffield who are rock-bottom with only a single point from eight matches so far played.

THEWILL believes that that does not bode well when the schedule resumes after the international break when they host West Ham impressive this season, beating Leicester, drawing with both Spurs and Man City while only just losing to Liverpool two goals to one.
