April 10, (THEWILL) – Former Aston Villa manager, Dean Smith, is set to take over as interim manager of Leicester City, alongside two others, until the end of the season.
The struggling club is currently second-bottom in the English Premier League and has won just seven league games all term. Smith, who has been out of work since being sacked by Championship side, Norwich City in December, will be tasked with keeping the Foxes in the top flight. He will be joined by Craig Shakespeare and John Terry as part of his coaching staff.
Leicester City have been in search of a new manager since Brendan Rodgers left by mutual consent earlier this month. The club spoke to a number of candidates, including former Leeds United head coach, Jesse Marsch. Caretaker managers, Adam Sadler and Mike Stowell were in charge for the midweek defeat by Aston Villa and Saturday’s loss to Bournemouth.
If everything goes as planned, Smith will take charge of the club’s next game against Manchester City on Saturday. Smith previously worked with Shakespeare at Norwich and will now be reunited with his former number two. He also worked with Terry at Aston Villa, where the latter served as an assistant head coach.
The 52-year-old led Villa to the EPL via the playoffs in 2018/2019 and achieved an 11th-placed finish the following season before being sacked in November 2021. He subsequently signed a deal to replace Daniel Farke at Norwich but was unable to prevent the club’s relegation from the EPL and left in December.
