BEVERLY HILLS, August 16, (THEWILL) – Spanish side, Sevilla, has defeated Manchester United 2-1 to advance into the Europa League final, with goals from Suso and Luuk De Jong cancelling out Bruno Fernandes’ penalty at the Rhein Energie Stadium in Koln, Germany.
The win on Sunday night gave Sevilla their fourth ticket to the Europa League Final.
This is also the first time in five European semi-final appearances that the Red Devils have failed to progress to the final of a continental competition.
Sevilla, who won the Europa League from 2014-2016 were lucky as Man United wasted a lot of chances.
The Red Devils started the game well and took a deserved lead in the nine minutes through a penalty kick after Marcus Rashford was fouled by a Sevilla defender.
Fernandes converted the spot kick to goal.
Sevilla responded through from Suso, a former Liverpool midfielder, in the 26th minute.
United regained control of the game as they tried to regain the lead, but the Spanish side was adamant.
The heroic display of Sevilla’s goalkeeper denied Mason Greenwood, Marus Rashford and Tony Martial from registering their names on the scoring sheet.
Sevilla eventually scored the winning goal in the 78th minute through Luuk De Jong.
Man United, who introduced Nigerian striker, Odion Ighalo, in the 93rd minute, could not find the net against a determined Sevilla side.
THEWILL reports that Sevilla will pay the winner of Monday’s semi-final game between Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk.
The Europa League final will take place this Friday.
