May 21, (THEWILL)- The Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, has launched the Kano North Transport Service with 107 buses for members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the Kano North Senatorial zone.
Senator Jibrin, who represents Kano North Senatorial District at the National Assembly, distributed the new Volkswagen and Toyota vehicles to the beneficiaries at a colourful ceremony, which was held at the new Bichi Stadium, Gwarzo road, on Monday.
The lawmaker gave the vehicles to the beneficiaries under a heavily subsidised Hire Purchase scheme facilitated by him.
Senator Barau Jibrin, who is also the Deputy Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, said the idea behind facilitating the transport project was to ease the problem of transportation within the senatorial district and across Kano State, as well as empower the people.
The direct beneficiaries of the project, the lawmaker said, are members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) across all the Local Government Areas in Kano North Senatorial District.
An official of NURTW, Malam Rabi’u Bichi, who spoke to our Correspondent at the venue of the event, described the gesture as the first of its kind by any politician in Kano State.
“Senator Jibrin has made us proud. His empowerment programmes always have positive impact on the people. You can imagine how many families that will benefit directly from this initiative.
“You can also agree with me that the launching of these 107 buses will go a long way in easing the challenges of transportation in Kano North and the entire Kano State.
“We pray God to continue to bless Senator Jibrin because of the way he keeps empowering, not only people from Kano North, but everybody in Kano State. We do hope that other politicians will emulate him”, Rabi’u added.
