March 31, (THEWILL)- Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool moved to the top of the English Premier League with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion at Anfield. The triumph marked the German’s 300th competitive win as Reds manager, though his side endured a nervy afternoon against a resolute Seagulls outfit.

Danny Welbeck’s early thunderbolt opened the scoring for the visitors after just two minutes, stunning the Kop faithful. However, Liverpool have been the EPL’s comeback kings this season, and they duly levelled proceedings through Luis Díaz’s instinctive finish midway through the first half.

The hosts started the second period even better, and Mohamed Salah’s ninth career strike against Brighton put them ahead just before the hour mark. Liverpool could have extended their advantage but Alexis Mac Allister and Salah squandered presentable openings.

Brighton rallied late on, with Reds’ keeper Caoimhín Kelleher forced into decisive interventions to deny Lewis Dunk’s headed efforts. Ultimately, though, Liverpool held firm to claim another vital three points in their pursuit of more EPL glory.

The result piles pressure on title rivals Manchester City and Arsenal ahead of their heavyweight clash at the Etihad Stadium later on Sunday.
