October 20, (THEWILL) – Liverpool returned to the top of the English Premier League table with a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Anfield, on Sunday. The win extended Liverpool’s unbeaten run to seven consecutive matches across all competitions, maintaining their one-point lead over second-placed Manchester City.

The match began cautiously, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances in the opening 20 minutes. However, the game burst into life when Mohamed Salah converted a penalty after Curtis Jones was fouled in the box by Levi Colwill. Liverpool continued to threaten on the counter-attack but were unable to extend their lead before half-time.

Chelsea equalised four minutes into the second half through Nicolas Jackson, who slotted past Caoimhin Kelleher after an initial offside call was overturned. Liverpool’s response was swift, with Curtis Jones restoring their lead just three minutes later, finishing off a well-placed cross from Salah.

The home side’s defence, which has been the most effective in the league this season, successfully repelled Chelsea’s attempts to find another equaliser. Liverpool manager Arne Slot made tactical substitutions in the latter stages of the match, introducing Alexis Mac Allister and Joe Gomez to help maintain their advantage.

The defeat marks Chelsea’s first away loss in the League this season, leaving Enzo Maresca’s team in sixth place, seven points behind league leaders Liverpool. The result further solidifies Liverpool’s position at the summit of the table as they continue their pursuit of a title in Slot’s first season at Anfield.
