July 07, (THEWILL) – On Thursday at the All England Club Championship, Elena Rybakina defeated Simona Halep on Centre Court and advanced to the Wimbledon final with a spectacular performance.
Halep won the tournament in 2019, and in the absence of world number one, Iga Swiatek, was considered the overwhelming favourite to get to the finals this time, and possibly win it again. But, the Romanian was unable to compete on Rybakina’s level and lost easily, 6-3, 6-3, in an hour and 15 minutes.
It turned out to be a terribly disappointing performance for the two-time Grand Slam singles champion on the grandest platform of the moment, but Rybakina could not have played a better round of tennis to ensure her passage to the final of the 2022 competition.
The 23-year-old Kazakhstani will now get ready for Saturday afternoon’s thrilling final against Ons Jabeur, after the 27-year-old Tunisian defeated Tatjana Maria, a close friend of hers, earlier in the day.
