September 09, (THEWILL) – Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 901st career goal to give Portugal a 2-1 victory over Scotland in the Nations League on Sunday. The 39-year-old striker came off the bench to net the winner in the 88th minute at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon.
Scotland took an early lead through Scott McTominay’s header in the seventh minute. However, Portugal equalised after halftime when Bruno Fernandes scored from long range. Ronaldo then tapped in a cross from Nuno Mendes to complete Portugal’s comeback.
The win was Portugal’s second straight in Nations League Group A1. For Scotland, it extended their poor run of form in 2024. Steve Clarke’s side have won just once in 14 matches this year and failed to progress past the group stage at Euro 2024.
Portugal manager, Roberto Martinez, joked before the match about upsetting his Scottish father-in-law with a win. Martinez met his wife, Beth, while playing for Motherwell in Scotland in 2001. The result means Scotland are still searching for their first ever victory against Portugal.
