June 12, (THEWILL) – Cristiano Ronaldo rolled back the years with two clinical finishes as Portugal cruised to a 3-0 friendly victory over the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday in their final Euro 2024 warm-up match. The 39-year-old striker was in inspired form, curling home an exquisite opener shortly after half-time before rifling in his second from close range as Roberto Martinez’s side overcame a recent defeat by Croatia.
Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix had given Portugal a first-half lead, converting emphatically following a short corner routine. Veteran defender Pepe, set to become the oldest player to feature at the European Championships aged 41, also started in Aveiro as Portugal’s Euro 2016 winners looked to build confidence ahead of their Group F opener against the Czech Republic on June 18.
Ronaldo was denied by the woodwork and an excellent Caoimhin Kelleher save in the first period, but made no mistake after the interval. His first arrived just three minutes into the second half, the Al-Nassr striker bending an unstoppable effort into the top corner. Diogo Jota was the provider for Ronaldo’s second, leaving the legendary marksman with a simple side-footed finish from eight yards.
Despite Ronaldo going close to a hat-trick, Portugal could not add to their tally against an Ireland side managed by interim coach John O’Shea. Nevertheless, Martinez’s men will head into Euro 2024 in Germany buoyed by a morale-boosting display from their iconic captain following qualifying with a 100% record.
