July 18, (THEWILL) – Roma have acquired Australian goalkeeper, Mathew Ryan, on a free transfer. The Serie A club announced the signing on Wednesday. Ryan joins Roma after leaving the Dutch side, AZ Alkmaar, at the end of last season.
The 32-year-old has agreed to a one-year contract with an option for an additional season. He is expected to serve as backup to Roma’s first-choice goalkeeper Mile Svilar. Ryan brings considerable experience, having earned 93 caps for Australia and featured in the last three World Cups.
Ryan previously played in the English Premier League for Brighton and Hove Albion and had a loan spell at Arsenal. He now moves to Italy for the first time in his career. Roma finished sixth in Serie A last season and will begin their 2024/2025 campaign away to Cagliari on August 18.
The signing provides Roma manager Daniele De Rossi with additional depth in the goalkeeping position. Ryan’s arrival on a free transfer represents a low-risk addition for the Italian club as they aim to improve on last season’s league performance.
