May 27, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid staged a remarkable comeback as Rodrygo shone with a lethal brace, propelling his team to a hard-fought 2-1 victory against 10-man Sevilla in La Liga on Saturday.
Under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti, Madrid solidified their hold on second place in the league standings after overcoming an early setback at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.
Sevilla got off to a flying start when Rafa Mir found the back of the net in the third minute, capitalising on a fortuitous rebound from Bryan Gil’s initial effort. However, Rodrygo missed a glorious chance to level the score shortly after, squandering an unmarked opportunity from a low cross by Lucas Vazquez. Nevertheless, the young Madrid winger made amends, deceiving an unsighted Yassine Bounou with a superb 25-yard free-kick that nestled into the bottom-right corner in the 29th minute.
Despite several chances for both teams, it was Rodrygo who proved to be the difference-maker once again. In the 69th minute, he calmly finished off a rapid counter-attack, sliding the ball into the bottom-right corner and securing the victory for Madrid. The match took a turn for the worse for Sevilla as Marcos Acuna received a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Vazquez.
With this win, Madrid extended their lead over rivals Atletico Madrid to four points, while Atletico prepare to face Real Sociedad on Sunday.
