Rivers Assembly Vetoes Fubara, Enact Service Commission Law

March 22, (THEWILL)- The Rivers State House of Assembly, on Friday, vetoed Governor Siminalayi Fubara, to enact the Service Commission Law.

This comes after the Governor withheld his assent to the Rivers State House of Assembly (RSHA) Service Commission bill after it was passed by the lawmakers.

The House had relied on Section 100, Subsection 5, to say that the assent of the governor was not required for the passage into law of the bill.

“Where the Governor withholds assent and the bill is again passed by a two-thirds majority, the bill shall become a law and the assent of the Governor shall not be required”, read a statement made public by the media aide to the Speaker of the State Assembly, Martins Wachukwu.

THEWILL reports that it is the second time the Rivers State House of Assembly has vetoed the Governor.

Earlier in January, the lawmakers had also voted to override the governor and pass four new bills into law. These were the Rivers State Local Government Law (Amendment) Bill, the Rivers State Traditional Rulers’ Law (Amendment) Bill, and the Rivers State Advertisement and Use of State-owned Property Prohibition (Repeal) Bill.
