July 18, (THEWILL) – Chioma Onyekwere, the African Record holder in Discus, made a resounding comeback at the Victoria Classic in Canada, reaffirming her place at the top of women’s Discus.
With an impressive throw of 60.13m, Onyekwere claimed victory and etched her name in the event’s history by setting a new Meeting Record. This outstanding performance serves as a testament to her determination and hard work, as she triumphantly returns to her peak form after weeks of below-par marks lingering around the 50m range.
Joining Onyekwere at the top of the standings were her compatriots, Obiageri Amaechi, who finished third with a throw of 57.75m, and Ashley Anumba, the recently crowned National champion, who secured fourth place with a distance of 57.38m. Notably, this result was a reversal of positions from their performances in Vancouver, where Anumba claimed third place with a throw of 59.64m, and Amaechi achieved a Season Best (SB) of 57.77m to secure fourth.
In the women’s hammer throw, Sade Olatoye delivered an impressive performance, settling for second place with a remarkable SB of 69.36m. This marked a notable improvement from her previous performance of 67.17m in Vancouver. As the competition intensifies, Onyekwere aims to participate in more events to refine her techniques and find her rhythm, all in preparation for the upcoming World Championships in Budapest.
Simultaneously, Amaechi, Anumba, and Olatoye are determined to meet the qualifying standards or achieve exceptional marks that will enhance their rankings on the qualification leaderboard.
