July 31, (THEWILL) – Business activities ended abruptly in Imo State on Wednesday morning following sporadic gunshots that rocked some parts of the state capital, Owerri.
The gunshots, which occurred at Okigwe, Wetheral, Ikenegbu, Ama Hausa, IMSU back gate, MCC Road, Okigwe Road and Tetlow junction road close to the State Police Command, caused panic among residents, including traders as well as students of the Imo State University (IMSU), who scampered for safety.
Although THEWILL cannot immediately confirm the reason for the gunshots, spokesperson of the State Police Command, Henry Okoye, however, suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
“They are pure cowards. The criminals, suspected to be members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN, adopted a guerrilla-like strategy where they come out from their enclaves, unleash a surprise attack and go back into hiding.
“However, concerted efforts are underway by security agencies to apprehend them,” he said.
