BEVERLY HILLS, February 10, (THEWILL) – The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been ordered to unfreeze the bank accounts of 20 #EndSARS promoters.
The ruling brings reprieve to the youth deemed to have been subjected to punishment by the government for playing a role in the nationwide October 2020 protests against police brutality.
Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja, today gave the ruling following an agreement reached by the feuding parties to amicably resolve the matter in the suit brought by the #EndSARS protagonists.
Justice Mohammed, who commended counsel to the CBN, Chief Michael Andoaka, and lawyer to the defendants, Mr. Femi Falana, ruled that, “All processes filed in respect of the case are hereby deemed to have been withdrawn.”
The Judge, then, set aside the November 4, 2020 order and ordered that all the accounts of the affected persons “be immediately defreezed.”
The CBN in an ex parte motion marked: FHC/ABJ/ CS/1384/2020, had prayed the court to freeze the bank accounts of Bolatito Rachael Oduala and 19 others who participated in the October 2020 protest against police brutality in the country.
The CBN said it took the action to investigate the promoters of the protest on allegations bordering on terrorism financing, among others.
