August 14, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid’s promising new signing, 18-year-old Arda Guler, has been ruled out for a lengthy sideline stay after undergoing knee surgery.
The Turkish midfielder, who joined Real from Fenerbahce in July, had to cut short the team’s pre-season tour of the United States due to a knee injury. According to a statement from Real Madrid, Guler underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Monday. The procedure was overseen by Real’s medical staff.
Guler will now begin recovery and rehabilitation work in the coming days as he aims to get back to full fitness. The knee injury and surgery are a blow for both Guler and Real Madrid. The young player had been expected to provide depth in midfield this season after impressing in the Turkish league with Fenerbahce. Real are also now dealing with injuries to two other key players, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defender Eder Militao, who have both sustained anterior cruciate ligament damage.
Despite the injury setbacks, Real Madrid made a winning start in La Liga over the weekend, beating Athletic Bilbao 2-0 away from home. The team is next in action on Saturday away to Almeria. Coach Carlo Ancelotti will hope to have players back from injury as soon as possible as Real look to win back their La Liga title and challenge for the UEFA Champions League this season.
Guler will now target a return to action from knee surgery as quickly as possible. But Real Madrid will not want to rush the teenager back before he has fully recovered. Getting the exciting young Turkish midfielder back fit and firing again will be a priority in the coming weeks and months.
