January 31, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid’s left-back, Ferland Mendy, is set to be out of action for the next six weeks due to a thigh injury.
The 27-year-old suffered the injury during the Copa del Rey quarter-final match against Atletico Madrid. On Tuesday, Los Blancos confirmed that Mendy has been diagnosed with a muscle injury.
This injury comes at a crucial point in the season for the Spanish giants, who are trailing Barcelona by five points in La Liga and have important league games against Valencia, Real Betis, and a Madrid derby against Atletico on February 26. Real will also be without Mendy for the UEFA Champions League last-16 first leg against Liverpool on February 21.
The absence of Ferland Mendy, is a blow to Real Madrid, as they lack depth in the left-back position. Nacho Fernandez, a centre-back, has often filled in but was needed on the right in the recent match against Real Sociedad, forcing midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, to line up on the left.
Ancelotti praised Camavinga’s performance, stating he is an option they can use, even if he is not comfortable in the position. Camavinga brings energy and can play well as an inside full-back, according to the manager.
