Real Madrid End La Liga Campaign With Goalless Draw Against Betis

May 26, (THEWILL)- Real Madrid concluded their victorious La Liga season with a 0-0 draw against Real Betis, at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Spanish champions lifted their 36th league title in front of their home fans, where they remained unbeaten throughout the campaign.
In his final appearance at the Bernabeu, Toni Kroos received a guard of honour before the match. The German midfield maestro, who announced his retirement from club football after the European Championships, controlled the game’s tempo with his trademark passing accuracy of 97%.
The first half belonged to Real Madrid, with Ferland Mendy being their most threatening player. The French full-back saw two shots saved as the hosts dominated proceedings. Betis grew into the game and came close to scoring, but Thibaut Courtois’ brilliant save and a tight offside call denied them the lead.
After the break, Betis maintained their momentum, forcing Courtois into a stunning save to deny Ayoze Perez’s curling effort. The Belgian goalkeeper was in fine form, also denying Juan Miranda’s close-range shot.
With the UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund looming, Carlo Ancelotti withdrew Courtois and club captain Nacho in their final appearances for the club. Kroos received a standing ovation as he was also substituted in the closing stages.
