July 04, (THEWILL) – Arsenal have confirmed the permanent signing of goalkeeper David Raya following a successful loan spell from Brentford during the 2023/2024 season.
The Spanish stopper joined the Gunners initially on a season-long loan for a £3 million fee, with a £27 million option to make the transfer permanent.
Raya’s impressive performances saw him displace Aaron Ramsdale as Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper. He played a crucial role in the team’s English Premier League campaign, keeping 16 clean sheets and helping Arsenal claim a runners-up finish. His outstanding form earned him the EPL Golden Glove award, with only Everton’s Jordan Pickford coming close with 13 clean sheets.
Despite conceding 24 goals from an expected goals on target (xGoT) of 20.93, Raya’s overall contribution to the team was significant. His ability to distribute the ball and command his area aligned well with manager Mikel Arteta’s tactical approach.
Upon signing a long-term contract with Arsenal, Raya expressed his excitement about his future with the club, stating: “After a year on loan as a Gunner, I can finally say that I’m an Arsenal player for the coming years. I’m excited to see what the future holds but always living in and enjoying the present.”
The 28-year-old goalkeeper also took the opportunity to thank the Arsenal supporters for their backing throughout his loan spell. “It’s a dream come true to be here and I want to thank you for all the support you have already given me throughout the last year,” Raya added, cementing his commitment to the North London club.
