January 18, (THEWILL) – Alexia Putellas was crowned the Best FIFA Women’s Player for 2021, following her Ballon d’Or victory.
Last season, the Spaniard led Barcelona to the treble and was Europe’s top scoring midfielder.
“I’m very happy and thrilled. I would like to thank all my teammates and congratulate them because this award is for all of us,” she said at the ceremony in Zurich.
She was, however, inexplicably left out of the FIFPRO world XI for women. In fact, the XI omitted Barcelona Femeni stars despite their glowing 2020/2021 season, where they finished with a treble.
The women FIFPRO world XI included Christiane Endler, Lucy Bronze, Millie Bright, Magdalena Eriksson, Wendie Renard, Estefania Banini, Barbara Bonansea, Carli Lloyd, Marta, Vivianne Miedema, Alex Morgan.
