July 28, (HEWILL) – Paris Saint-Germain have engaged in talks with Barcelona regarding the potential signing of Ousmane Dembele, according to sources monitored by THEWILL.
The 26-year-old forward became one of the most expensive players in the world back in 2017, moving to Camp Nou from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth an initial £90m. However, Dembele’s time in Spain has been plagued by numerous injury problems, resulting in limited appearances in La Liga, with an average of just over 21 games per season.
His goal-scoring record has also been modest, never surpassing eight league goals in a single campaign. Barcelona, who claimed a convincing 2022/2023 La Liga title under the management of club legend, Xavi Hernandez, have been in talks with Dembele to extend his contract, but negotiations have hit obstacles. PSG’s interest has been reignited, and they see Dembele as a potential acquisition for as little as €50m before July 31, due to a release clause in his contract.
Beyond that date, the figure increases to €100m, though it’s unlikely Barcelona could command such a fee for a player frequently sidelined due to injury. PSG’s pursuit of Dembele is not contingent on the potential departure of Kylian Mbappe, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid. The French club views Dembele as a valuable asset regardless of Mbappe’s situation.
As Barcelona grapple with financial challenges, they may consider selling Dembele for the right price, with PSG emerging as a strong contender for the winger’s signature.
