SAN FRANCISCO, August 27, (THEWILL) – President Goodluck Jonathan and former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, met Wednesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja over the general insecurity in the country.
THEWILL gathered that the meeting was at the behest of President Jonathan, a development former President Obasanjo also confirmed on his return from Abuja.
In an encounter with anxious newsmen in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Obasanjo confirmed his meeting with President Jonathan in Abuja, saying the meeting was purely on security matters.
“Yes, I can confirm that I met with Mr. President on his invitation. In fact, he had wanted to come down to Abeokuta, but as a sign of respect to the Office of the President, I had to go. We had discussion on the country’s security issues and that is all,” he said.
Obasanjo, who promised that he would continue to make himself available on national issues in the interest of peace and progress of the country, also spoke on the Nassarawa crisis.
He called on the Benue and Nassarawa State Governments to work towards peace in the warring communities, stressing that it is important for the herdsmen and farmers to understand themselves over the differences.
“There is no way, such will not happen, but the two state governments should come up with lasting solutions. The farmers would want their crops to be protected, while the herdsmen will also want their cattle to feed. So, the government should fashion out peaceful means to end the crisis,” Obasanjo said.
