BEVERLY HILLS, CA, December 12, (THEWILL) – Despite the purported animosity between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and President Goodluck Jonathan at home, the two leaders, who were among other African leaders at the 50th Independence Anniversary celebration of Kenya, met privately for a closed door meeting on Thursday in Nairobi.
Sources close to the two leaders disclosed that Obasanjo had joined Jonathan at the Intercontinental Hotel, Nairobi, for a private breakfast, just before the independence anniversary celebration which later held at the Safaricom Stadium in Kasarani, Nairobi.
Obasanjo had sparked off controversy at home with his 13-page letter to President Jonathan, which the Presidency described as self serving and provocative.
At the independence celebration, Obasanjo was seen sitting quietly, making calls at intervals .
And speaking at the occasion, President Jonathan urged all Kenyans to unite, saying there was no alternative to unity if Kenyans must move their nation forward.
Jonathan said if they must build their country, Kenyans must make unity their focal point.
Maintaining that the destiny of Kenya lies with its people and as such the people must strive hard to take their country to greater heights, President Jonathan expressed happiness that Rhaila Odinga was present at the event and working with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“Nobody can love you more than Kenyans; so you all have to jointly develop your country. All Kenyans should come together to form an inclusive society.
“Africa since 2007, many African countries like Kenya have been celebrating 50 years of independence and freedom, our founding fathers talked of political freedom to be followed by economic freedom.
“The present generation of African leaders must work hard on science and technology as well as industrialisation, so that there could be economic development and freedom,” Jonathan said.
