BEVERLY HILLS, June 04, (THEWILL) – After almost 1.3 million votes were cast and accounted for, Porto’s striker Mehdi Taremi emerged as the 2020/2021 winner of the UEFA Champions League Goal of the Tournament.
The striker netted a gloriously stunning bicycle kick in the return fixture of the UCL quarter-final tie between Porto and Chelsea to win the game for his side at Stamford Bridge.
But, it was too little too late as Chelsea’s 2-0 victory in the first leg away at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, played in Seville due to COVID-19 concerns, gave the eventual winners a 2-1 aggregate victory and qualification into the next stage.
Fans selected Taremi’s bicycle kick goal from the top 10 goals of the season compiled by UEFA’s Technical Observers soon after the final. The shortlist of 10 went for a fan vote on Monday 31 May.
Taremi’s goal took the award at it received more than 750,000 votes of the near 1.3 million total votes cast.
