August 16, (THEWILL) – Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, announced on Friday that Poland will officially bid to host the Olympic Games in 2040 or 2044. This decision marks a significant step for the country, which has never hosted an Olympic Games before.
Tusk explained: “I dedicate this decision to the 10, 12 and 15-year-olds of today. Poland will officially bid to host the Olympic Games.” He added that 2040 or 2044 are realistic prospects, considering the decisions, commitments, and preliminary statements of the International Olympic Committee.
This announcement follows a previous statement by Poland’s conservative president Andrzej Duda, who last year stated his intention to submit a bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics. While Poland has not hosted the Olympics before, it has experience with major sporting events. The country co-hosted the European football Championship with Ukraine in 2012 and hosted the European Games in 2023.
Poland’s bid for the 2040 or 2044 Olympics is not without competition. Berlin has also announced plans to bid for the 2040 Games, setting the stage for a competitive selection process.
