September 15, (THEWILL) – Oscar Piastri won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday, marking his second victory in Formula 1.
The 23-year-old Australian driver for McLaren finished ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in a tense race that ended under a Virtual Safety Car. The race conclusion was triggered by a collision between Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez as they fought for third place.
McLaren now leads the constructors’ championship, ending Red Bull’s two-year dominance. George Russell of Mercedes took third place, followed by Lando Norris in the second McLaren. Max Verstappen, the current championship leader, finished fifth for Red Bull.
Piastri’s victory was well-executed, with the young driver managing pressure from Leclerc throughout the race. The Australian took the lead on lap 20 and maintained it until the end, despite Leclerc’s efforts to overtake. Piastri’s superior traction exiting Turn One proved crucial in maintaining his position.
Lando Norris made an impressive recovery drive from 15th on the grid to finish fourth, reducing Verstappen’s championship lead to 59 points. Fernando Alonso finished sixth for Aston Martin, while Alex Albon brought his Williams home in seventh place.
Lewis Hamilton, starting from the pit lane due to overnight power-unit changes, managed to finish ninth. Ollie Bearman, substituting for the suspended Kevin Magnussen at Haas, scored points on his debut, finishing tenth ahead of teammate Nico Hulkenberg.
