January 01, (THEWILL) – The Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), have failed to finalise a potential merger deal by the initial December 31 deadline, according to PGA Tour commissioner, Jay Monahan. He announced in a statement to players on Sunday that negotiations will now be extended into the new year.

Exact details of the proposed merger are undisclosed, but it would likely see the PIF and other groups become minority shareholders in a new PGA Tour commercial entity named PGA Tour Enterprises. This deal aims to bring together major golfing organisations including the PIF-owned LIV Golf league, the DP World Tour, and investment firm Strategic Sports Group.

Monahan affirmed that “meaningful progress” has been achieved recently, particularly with Strategic Sports Group. However, more time was required to iron out the considerable complexities involved. He described discussions so far as “active and productive,” without confirming a revised target date for successful conclusion.

The original framework deal between PGA Tour and PIF was unveiled last June, much to the surprise of players who demanded greater transparency around decision-making. Tiger Woods now occupies one of six new player director seats on the PGA Tour policy board created partially in response to these concerns.

Woods stated his faith in Monahan’s leadership last month, but the shock departure of Masters winner Jon Rahm to LIV Golf in December was an untimely disruption. Rahm’s reported $566 million deal reinforced LIV’s financial dominance ahead of this deadline, perhaps jeopardising player trust in the PGA Tour further.

With the high stakes merger in the balance, all parties seem motivated to persist in hammering out an agreement acceptable to investors and golfers alike. But this extended window suggests substantial negotiating still lies ahead in 2024 before a definitive way forward is found.
