July 27, (THEWILL) – The Paris 2024 Olympic Games commenced on Friday, with an unprecedented opening ceremony along the River Seine. For the first time in Olympic history, the ceremony took place outside a stadium, with athletes parading on boats past iconic Parisian landmarks.

Despite persistent rain, approximately 500,000 spectators lined the riverbanks and balconies to witness the spectacle. The armada of 85 boats carried around 7,000 athletes, led by the Greek delegation as per tradition. The ceremony blended French culture and history, featuring performances by international artists like Lady Gaga and Franco-Malian singer, Aya Nakamura.

Unfortunately, in an organisational hiccup, the Nigeria women’s basketball team was denied access to the boat for the opening ceremony due to overcapacity. A Nigerian official informed the team, which had travelled from Lille, that there was no room for them, resulting in the delegation sharing transport with Niger and Norway.

Security was heightened for the event, with 45,000 police and paramilitary officers deployed alongside additional military personnel and private security guards. The elaborate security measures aimed to prevent potential terror attacks and acts of sabotage, particularly in light of recent rail network disruptions.

Paris’s vision for the Games emphasises cost-effectiveness and sustainability, utilising existing historic locations for many competitions. This approach aligns with the city’s goal of hosting a more environmentally friendly Olympics compared to previous editions.

The ceremony marked the beginning of the first Olympics in Paris in 100 years, setting the stage for 16 days of sporting events. Despite challenges such as the inclement weather and security concerns, organisers successfully delivered a unique and memorable opening to the Games.
