OPINION: Insecurity: Is NFVCB Getting It Right?

July 13, (THEWILL) – “When the French were challenged, they turned to their General, Charles De Gaulle. When Britons were challenged, they turned to their great General, Wilson Churchill. Today, Nigeria is visibly challenged; economically challenged, physically challenged, security challenged… Who do we turn to? Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the right man for the job.”

The above was the statement of the National leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at a function before the just-concluded presidential election.

One of the greatest problems that appears insurmountable, as it stands today, is insecurity. It has continued to stare at the face of Nigeria despite the strategies deployed to tackle it. Families have been affected greatly by this ugly trend.

Security challenge has become a source of worry for Nigerian citizens. This development has forced investors to cease their business activities across the country. Also, the issue has gradually dragged our economy into hardship and quagmire, which is affecting individuals and families.

In the Northern part, there are Boko Haram terrorists, the Southeast is befallen by unknown gunmen, while the West is battling with the destruction of lives and properties by groups. In summary, all is not well. One begins to wonder how these men of the underworld formulated their criminal acts before implementing them. Where are the sources of getting the sophisticated ammunition they use for operation? Who funds them? and other questions that baffle one.

Sadly, The general public is no longer sleeping with their two eyes closed. Assassination, kidnapping, armed robbery, killings and other related criminalities have become the order of the day.

Past presidents of Nigeria had battled insecurity but could not achieve a breakthrough in combat. But while the challenges are being fought, it is advisable for the National Film and Video Censors Board, NFVCB, to play a complementary role in the efforts towards stemming these problems completely. A successful day-to-day business in Nigeria can no longer be predicted as no one knows what will strike at any moment.

There is a need to call this board to order. They can be said to have contributed to the rising moral debasement in our society. How could the National Censors Board fling with a wave of hands, local movies that lack didactics and morality? Let me ask again, Does it not worry this government establishment that the mechanisms of operation being deployed by the hoodlums were copied from the uncensored movies? Perhaps, they failed to understand this.

As a matter of fact and a sense of responsibility, there is supposed to be a promotion of decent behavioural attitude and inculcation of good morals into the subconscious minds of the viewers. The Nollywood actors and actresses should not forget that they ought to be partners in progress for the re-orientation of Nigerians. The kind of movies showcased by these thespians have made one ask whether the censors’ board does its job or they only accept “settlements” from the movie producers and financiers in order to avoid the sledgehammer of the board.

The National Film and Video Censors Board is the regulatory body set up by the Federal Government to regulate the film and video industry in the country. The Board is empowered by law to classify all films and videos whether imported or produced locally. It is also the duty of the board to register all films and video outlets across Nigeria.

Although the movie industry in Nigeria has excelled in its profession, there is a need for them to quit glorifying drug barons, kidnapping, lesbianism, sexual abuses, killings, get-rich-quick syndrome, homosexuality, infidelity, armed robbery, ritualism and other activities that do not depict decency in all ramifications.

Now that security challenges are greatly rising, it becomes highly expedient to change the psyche of the people towards a positive direction for a desired crime-free society.
