O’Neil Takes Over At Molineux As Wolves’ New Head Coach

August 09, (THEWILL) – Wolverhampton Wanderers have named Gary O’Neil, as their new head coach, the English Premier League club announced on Wednesday.

The 40-year-old has signed a three-year contract to take charge at Molineux. O’Neil arrives from Bournemouth, where he initially took over as caretaker manager last August before being appointed on a permanent basis in November. He helped the Cherries secure their Premier League status but was relieved of his duties in June.

The appointment comes just a day after Julen Lopetegui abruptly departed Wolves following differences of opinion. The Spanish manager had been in charge for less than a year after replacing Bruno Lage. As Wolves’ youngest manager this millennium, O’Neil brings top-flight experience both as a player and coach. He will be the first permanent British manager at the club in six years.

O’Neil’s first game in charge will be away to Manchester United on Monday, as Wolves kick off their EPL campaign. Securing a positive result against a top-six rival would be the perfect start to his tenure.
