July 30, (THEWILL) – On Monday, world number three, Carlos Alcaraz, overcame a groin injury to defeat Tallon Griekspoor 6-1 7-6(3) in the second round of the Paris Olympics tennis tournament. The Spanish player, who won this year’s French Open and Wimbledon titles, dominated the first set but faced increased resistance in the second.
Despite his discomfort, Alcaraz broke Griekspoor early and swiftly claimed the opening set in 32 minutes. The Dutchman ranked 28th globally, put up a stronger fight in the second set, forcing Alcaraz into occasional errors.
The match concluded with a tiebreak, where Alcaraz demonstrated his skill to secure the win. “I know how to manage this pain; it is normal for a tennis player. The schedule is demanding, so I will try to recover well tonight to be ready for tomorrow’s doubles”, Alcaraz told reporters after the match.
Alcaraz is set to partner with Nadal in the second round of the Olympic doubles tournament on Tuesday. Looking ahead, Alcaraz will face Russian Roman Safiullin, the world number 66 competing as a neutral athlete, in the singles third round.
Griekspoor acknowledged Alcaraz’s strong performance, stating: “He made it very difficult for me in the first set. I think I did well in the second, made a good fight of it, but he played a great match.”
