July 07, (THEWILL) – Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine set a new world record in the women’s high jump at the Diamond League meet in Paris on Sunday. The 22-year-old cleared 2.10 metres, surpassing the previous record of 2.09 metres set by Bulgaria’s Stefka Kostadinova in 1987.
Mahuchikh’s achievement comes just three weeks before the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she will be a strong contender for gold. The reigning world champion entered the competition at 1.92 metres and faced some challenges before successfully clearing 2.07 metres.
The Ukrainian athlete’s record-breaking jump was met with enthusiastic applause from the crowd at the Stade Charlety. Mahuchikh celebrated her triumph by sprinting to embrace her coaching team with arms held high.
This feat is particularly remarkable given Mahuchikh’s personal circumstances. In February 2022, she fled her native city of Dnipro due to Russian bombardment. Despite these hardships, she has continued to excel in her sport.
Mahuchikh’s impressive track record includes world gold in Budapest in 2023, silver in Eugene in 2022, and Olympic bronze. She also claimed world indoor silver in Glasgow in March 2024.
