July 02, (THEWILL) – Nigerian midfielder, Ngozi Okobi, has criticised Super Falcons head coach, Randy Waldrum, stating that Nigerian coaches are far superior to him.
Okobi’s comments came after Waldrum expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s preparations for the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, citing a lack of support from the Nigerian National Football Federation (NFF). Okobi, who was not included in Waldrum’s final 23-player squad for the tournament, accused the American coach of making excuses in anticipation of a poor performance at the World Cup.
She also claimed that Waldrum lacks an understanding of football and that Nigerian coaches are much better than him. In a recent interview, Okobi expressed her disappointment with Waldrum’s behaviour and urged him to leave the job if he feels frustrated. She criticised the NFF for allowing him to make such remarks without consequences, suggesting that Waldrum was seeking attention and trying to shift blame away from himself.
Okobi also mentioned personal differences with the coach and accused him of disapproving when she attempted to correct certain aspects of the team’s play that he had not taught them. Despite their differences, she expressed her desire for the team to succeed at the World Cup, hoping they would advance beyond the round of 16.
The Super Falcons, Nigeria’s national women’s football team, have been drawn into Group A for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. They will face Australia, Canada, and the Republic of Ireland in the group stage. The tournament is set to take place from July 20 to August 20 and will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
