NUGA: UNIPORT Retains Title As Debutants Nile Uni Finish Third Place

March 27, (THEWILL) – On Saturday evening, the 26th edition of the Nigerian University Games (NUGA), drew to a close at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka.

The competition, which began on March 16 and ended on March 26, saw the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) retain its title as champion over more than 70 other universities in the different athletic competitions that were contested in.

The event’s closing ceremony began around 5 pm at the university main pitch, with dignitaries from the academic and business worlds in attendance.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, led dignitaries to the closing ceremony, including Professor Attahiru Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Pro-Chancellor of the University of Jos; Professor Stephen Hamafyelto, Chairman of NUGA, and others.

Participating schools marched in front of the audience with an aura of enthusiasm and fulfilment during the event. The University of Lagos, the event’s host, dazzled everyone with their impressive dancing skills.

Professor Ogundipe thanked all of the event’s sponsors for their support while speaking to the audience. He stated that the university has set a bar that any future NUGA hosts will strive to meet.

The professor of Botany did not leave out the romantic story of the Abubakar Balewa University student, who proposed to his long-term girlfriend on Tuesday, blessing their union.

He finished his remarks by extinguishing the NUGA torch and thanking Professor Hamafyelto, the NUGA President, for his faith in the institution as he handed over the Games’ flag to him.

On the Medals Table, trophies were handed to the top three institutions as part of the closing ceremony. The University of Port Harcourt took home 120 medals, the University of Lagos 86, and Nile University, which was competing for the first time, took home 38 medals.

The trophies were presented to these three universities, with Port Harcourt being named the overall champion of the competition. The honour for the best-behaved university went to Benson Idahosa University.
