January 10, (THEWILL) – In a major coup, the National Television Authority (NTA) has successfully obtained the exclusive broadcasting rights for the highly anticipated 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) football tournament set to kick off this Saturday.
The landmark deal guarantees that every moment of the continental competition, featuring Africa’s top national teams, will be aired live on NTA. The move comes as a surprise after satellite TV giant MultiChoice, owners of sports channel SuperSport, failed to renew their previous AFCON coverage rights.
NTA has joined forces with sports marketing firm Afro Sports, sealing a game-changing broadcast rights partnership. Their agreement ensures comprehensive coverage of all 52 matches of the AFCON 2023 taking place in Côte d’Ivoire from January 13 to February 11.
MultiChoice revealed last week that SuperSport channels will not televise this year’s AFCON, following the Confederation of African Football’s decision to award exclusive sub-Saharan broadcast rights to New World TV.
However, MultiChoice stated that selected AFCON 2023 matches will still be freely available via partner free-to-air channels. StarTimes, a DStv competitor, had revealed that it earned broadcast rights for AFCON before the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission accused it of contravening broadcast codes that had to do with bundling international rights.
