June 24, (THEWILL) – The 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season concluded with a nail-biting finale, as clubs fought for survival and continental qualification. Sporting Lagos and Doma United faced relegation, joining Heartland Owerri and Gombe United in dropping to the Nigeria National League (NNL).
Sporting Lagos’ debut NPFL season ended in disappointment as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Shooting Stars in Ibadan. The loss left them 17th in the table with 46 points from 38 matches. Doma United were also relegated after a 1-1 home draw with Abia Warriors, finishing 18th with 44 points.
In contrast, Akwa United and Bayelsa United celebrated their survival in the top flight with crucial final-day victories. Akwa United overcame Rivers United 3-1, whilst Bayelsa United achieved an impressive 2-0 away win at Bendel Insurance.
Enugu Rangers, crowned champions after last week’s matches, finished on a high note with a 2-1 victory over relegated Gombe United. They will be joined in continental competition by Remo Stars and Enyimba. Remo Stars cemented their place with a 2-1 win against Katsina United, whilst Enyimba dramatically claimed the third continental spot with late goals from top scorers Chijioke Mbaoma and Alade Balogun.
The final matchday delivered excitement across the country, with 10 matches producing 29 goals. Seven home wins, two away victories, and a single draw rounded off a thrilling season that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.
