January 29,(THEWILL) – Atletico Madrid responded to their Copa del Rey elimination with a narrow victory over Osasuna.
Saul Niguez scored the only goal of the game in the 74th minute after some key saves from goalkeeper Jan Oblak kept Osasuna at bay. Despite the unconvincing performance, the win was much-needed for Diego Simeone’s side who remain in fourth place in La Liga, four points behind third-placed Real Sociedad.
The first half was drab with neither side seriously impressing. Aitor Fernandez repelled Antoine Griezmann from close range, while Chimy Avila headed a deep right-wing cross narrowly over the bar. The second half saw some better opportunities with Griezmann forcing a smart save from Fernandez and Oblak expertly denying Moi Gomez’s back-post half-volley.

The game was even with both teams having 13 shots each, but Atletico’s superior quality eventually showed in the second half. Saul’s calm finish proved the difference, securing the victory for Atletico. Atletico move three points clear of Villarreal and Real Betis in fifth and sixth place respectively.
Simeone’s hold tightly to that fourth place as a result of their victory, with Real Sociedad playing Real Madrid later on Sunday. The Yellow Submarine, in fifth place, will not be in action until Monday.
