September 11, (THEWILL) – Nigerian football star, Ashleigh Plumptre, has ended speculation about her future by announcing that she has agreed to join a foreign club led by a female coach.

The defender, who rose to prominence at the recent 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, will depart English side Leicester City after her contract expired. Plumptre had been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United following her impressive displays for Nigeria.

However, the 24-year-old revealed that she will be embarking on a new challenge abroad. While not disclosing the identity of her new team, Plumptre stated she was initially hesitant but changed her stance after speaking to the manager.

Plumptre said: “The team I’ve chosen I was completely sold by the coach. I wasn’t actually interested in the team initially. When my dad brought it up to me I was like no I don’t have interest in going genuinely. And then I had a call with the coach and we spoke about more than football, the things that I want to do in football, the impact I want to have, the connections that I want to make.”

The left-footed centre-back has previous experience playing in the USA for USC Trojans and LA Galaxy OC. She is excited by the opportunity to develop her game overseas again while making a difference on and off the pitch.

Plumptre represented Leicester 79 times after joining from Notts County in 2019. She will be hoping her next move can help elevate her career to even greater heights.
