BEVERLY HILLS, August 11, (THEWILL) – There are now 10 confirmed cases of Ebola in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial and financial capital.

Health Minister, Mr. Onyebuchi Chukwu, who gave the update in a briefing on Monday in Abuja, said the new case is a female nurse that had primary contact with the infected Liberian-American man, Patrick Sawyer, at the First Consultant Hospital in Lagos, where he was first treated.

Sawyer, who has been identified as the primary source of the disease in Lagos, died on July 25th, three days after he arrived Lagos from Monrovia by air.

Of the ten cases, two victims – Saywer and a nurse, who also had contact with him at the hospital – are deceased.

“The 10th case actually was one of the nurses who also had primary contact with the index case (Sawyer). When she got ill, we brought her into isolation. We just tested her over the weekend. So, that’s what made it 10. So, between Friday and today we had one additional case. That brings it to 10 and the 10 includes the index case,” the Minister said.

The outbreak of the disease in Nigeria has caused fear and panic amongst citizens.

The federal government last week declared an emergency over the epidemic which has killed almost 1000 persons in West Africa.
