December 04, (THEWILL) – Egypt claimed the gold while Nigeria took home the silver medal at the 2023 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3×3 Africa Cup, held in Egypt.
The tournament saw the hosts go undefeated to top the table, whilst Nigeria put up an impressive performance to finish second among the competing national teams.
The final match saw Egypt face off against continental rivals Nigeria. Led by Ahmed Mohamed, with seven points and Mido Taha adding another six, Egypt managed to edge out Nigeria by a score of 18-15. Amr Zahran landed a thunderous late dunk to seal Egypt’s FIBA 3×3 tournament victory on the home court.
Nigeria’s Robert Chima Ukawuba earned individual honours and was named to the 2023 FIBA 3×3 Africa Cup. All-Tournament Team, along with Egypt’s Rami Basha and Madagascar’s Elly Randriamampionona, the competition’s leading scorer. This caps off an admirable showing for Nigeria, even as Egypt completed a perfect championship run.
The FIBA 3×3 tournament sees national teams compete in a dynamic, fast-paced half-court variation of traditional 5-on-5 basketball. Nigeria will aim to capture a regional title at future FIBA 3×3 tournaments by building on this year’s momentum.
