August 27, (THEWILL) – The newly appointed Minister of Sports, John Owan Enoh, has declared building world-class infrastructure and facilities as a top priority under his administration.
The ex-senator stated that quality infrastructure is essential for Nigeria to succeed in sports during his first week in office. He emphasised the need to upgrade existing sports facilities across the country to match international standards. He singled out the Abuja National Stadium, noting that fully revamping it can make it competitive with top stadiums in Africa.
“Facilities and infrastructure are key to driving elite performance and grassroots growth in sports”, Enoh remarked after he personally evaluated the multi-sports complex’s condition as one of the first duties he performed upon assuming office.
Prior to his ministerial appointment, Enoh served as Senator representing Cross River Central from 2015-2019. Outside politics, Enoh has been engaged in farming since 2000 and owns farmlands for both crops and livestock across Cross River. As Minister, Enoh will be tasked with overseeing strategies for sports development in Nigeria. This includes maintenance of current sports infrastructure, building new high-quality facilities and providing an enabling environment for athletes to thrive.
While infrastructure is crucial, Enoh is also expected to direct investments into coaching, youth programmes and supporting sports Federations for Nigeria to achieve its sporting goals. His success will hinge on striking a balance between infrastructure-based and athlete-centric approaches.
