August 10, (THEWILL) – Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), announced on Saturday that he will not seek to extend his tenure beyond 2025.

Bach, who has led the IOC since 2013, made this declaration during the closing stages of the Paris Olympics, citing the need for new leadership in changing times.

The German lawyer’s decision comes despite calls from IOC members for him to remain in office. Bach explained that extending his mandate would require altering the Olympic charter, which currently limits the president to a maximum of 12 years – an eight-year initial term followed by a four-year second term.

During his 11-year presidency, Bach implemented significant reforms to the Olympic movement. These changes included streamlining the introduction of new sports, revamping the bidding process, and reducing overall costs associated with hosting the Games. His tenure also saw the IOC achieve strong financial results, with $7.3 billion secured for 2025-2028 and $6.2 billion already in place for 2029-2032.

The process to elect Bach’s successor will commence in March 2025 at the IOC session in ancient Olympia, Greece. The new president will assume office in June of that year, allowing for a smooth transition of power. Currently, no IOC member has publicly declared their intention to run for the position.

Bach’s departure will mark the end of an era for the IOC. His leadership style, characterised by strong control and minimal opposition, saw all but one vote during his presidency approved unanimously by IOC members. The incoming president will inherit an organisation that has undergone significant transformation and faces the challenge of steering the Olympic movement into its next phase.
