April 25, (THEWILL) – The Benue State Coordinator of National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Mr Iormough Daniel Iorzua, has confirmed the final sealing off of Ethanol Company facility in Makurdi metropolis, and not Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s facility, as reported in the media.
Reacting to a report credited to The Guardian newspaper, the State Coordinator said the Agency had visited the building in the course of its routine duty, where it demanded for certain documents.
According to him, one of the Supervisors was not available and a message was left behind that he should report to the office as soon as he is available in town.
“NESREA is throughly embarrassed with the report in The Guardian, which described Ayu as embattled National chairman of the PDP. We are not politicians, but carrying out our statutory duties”, he said.
According to him, NESREA had temporarily sealed off the premises of the Ethanol Company for breaching some of the Environmental Impact Assessment code until the breach is restored.
“We, however, left one of the gate at the company open because some Nationals and other staff are residence within the premises. We got information that despite the warning, the staff carryout operations in the midnight. This is why we decided to totally seal off the facility today.”
When our Correspondent visited the construction site, said to be owned by Senator Ayu, work was ongoing with no seal of NESEREA there.
A labourer, who gave his name as Agbidye Akpa, confirmed that some men came to the site and inspected the building without stopping the work; pointing out that they asked for site Engineer to report with documents to their office when he is back.
