August 16, (THEWILL) – British cyclist Pfeiffer Georgi suffered serious injuries during the fifth stage of the 2024 Tour de France Femmes. The 23-year-old rider was involved in a high-speed crash approximately six kilometres from the finish line on Thursday, forcing her to abandon the race.

Medical assessments revealed that Georgi sustained fractures in her neck and right hand. Team doctor Camiel Aldershof stated that the neck injuries do not require surgery. However, due to the severity of the fall, Georgi’s condition will be closely monitored as she returns home to recover.

The incident is a significant blow to Georgi’s team, DSM-Firmenich PostNL. Coach Albert Timmer expressed disappointment, noting Georgi’s importance both on and off the bike. He described her as the team’s road captain and highlighted her valuable contributions to the group dynamic.

Recovery time for Georgi is expected to be at least four weeks, during which she will be unable to ride. The team emphasised that there is no rush for her return, prioritising her health and full recovery above all else.

This setback comes at a crucial time in the women’s cycling calendar, with the Tour de France Femmes being one of the most important events of the year. Georgi’s absence will undoubtedly impact her team’s strategy and performance in the remaining stages of the tour.
