July 10, (THEWILL) – Napoli have signed defender, Leonardo Spinazzola, on a free transfer, the Serie A club announced on Wednesday. The 31-year-old Italian international has joined the Partenopei after his contract with AS Roma expired last month.

Spinazzola has agreed to a two-year deal with Napoli, according to reports in Italian media. He made 151 appearances for Roma during his time at the club, helping them win the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2022.

The left-back was a key member of Italy’s Euro 2020-winning squad, although injuries have limited his playing time in recent seasons. Spinazzola’s arrival marks the first major signing for new Napoli manager Antonio Conte, who took charge in June.

Napoli will hope Spinazzola can help improve their fortunes after a disappointing 2023/2024 campaign. After lifting the Scudetto in the previous campaign, the club finished 10th in Serie A and went through three different managers over the course of the season.

With his experience and quality when fit, Spinazzola could prove an astute free transfer addition for Napoli as they aim to challenge for the title and UEFA Champions League qualification again next season under Conte’s leadership.
